Live NFL - Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos 1.30am Sky Sports

Denver had a slightly bizarre off-season and lost a couple of key players, but they added some strong talent in key positions on both sides of the ball.

Baltimore, similarly, lost some important members of the organisation, including the face of the franchise, Ray Lewis, and players of the calibre of Ed Reed.

Flacco put the Broncos away last year in the post-season, but crucially he has lost Boldin and Pitta downfield. The offense will likely key on Ray Rice therefore, and he should find some joy against an undersized Denver middle.

The Broncos, of course, go through Peyton Manning and keeping him upright is their priority. Manning certainly has people to throw to (the backfield is a mess and will likely see Knowshon Moreno get the nod, if only for his ability to protect the QB) and if Denver can stifle Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil, the home team should come out on top.

The Suggs/Dumervil versus Ryan Clady/Orlando Franklin battle may decide the game, because the loss of Reed makes the Ravens look vulnerable at safety and raw at linebacker; they have the odd fine player, but they'll need to juggle the defense to combat the passing attack. Baltimore have to get to Manning.

I give the edge to the hosts and the points to the visitors, just.

Pick: Denver Broncos -7 @ 1.87

Pick: 1st TD Demayrius Thomas @ 8.5
Pick: Anytime TD Ray Rice @ 2.0

**If you've stumbled on this blog for the first time, I pick ATS and then include the TD bets for a little 'in game' interest.

On a more general point, I wouldn't recommend getting heavily involved in football betting until about Week 3.

Live MLB - Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees 12am ESPN

I've opposed Peavy recently and it's cost me, but in this game I'm going to try it again.

Peavy has put up some nice numbers (0.74/1.66 L3) but is 0-4 lifetime against the Yankees. Ivan Nova has been strong too (1.24/3.25 L3) and has a slightly more encouraging record against the Red Sox. A streak also plays for New York.

The road team are rolling on offense, so Nova will need to be sharp, but I'll take the bombers.

Pick: New York Yankees @ 1.95

Live MLB - Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox 12am ESPN

Jeff Kellog behind home, Porcello and Dempster on the hill, on a fine evening at Fenway?

Runs.

Pick: Over 9.5 @ 1.95

Live MLB - Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics 8.30pm ESPN

It would be really nice if pitchers I'm opposing would stop having season topping nights! I loved that bet *sigh*

This afternoon's pitchers are both capable of shutdown performances, so the call is Under. Buy the half point if you want, but I need the money!

If Darvish has one team that troubles him, it's Oakland ( 1-4, 4.22 ERA lifetime, including two losses this term) so I'll take the home dog too.

Pick: Under 6.5 @ 2.1
Pick: Oakland A's @ 2.1

Live MLB - Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox 12am ESPN

If you give me Scherzer on the hill as a dog, I'll take it. He's 8-0 with a 2.14 ERA on the road and even though he had a rough outing last time, Detroit look the value.

Pick: Detroit Tigers @ 2.05

Live MLB - St Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds 6pm ESPN

Brutal. Last night's game went just as I thought ... then three runs in the 8th picked my pocket.

Both of this afternoon's hurlers are strong, but have oddly poor numbers against today's opposition.

Wainwright and Latos are both in Sagarin's top fifteen. The former is in the top ten, but is 5-8 with a 4.84 ERA in 14 starts against Cincinnati. Similarly, Latos is 4-5 with a 6.25 ERA in 11 starts against St Louis.

I'm going with Wainwright's marginally better career numbers and splits and the fact that the Cardinals have won five of their last seven at Cincinnati.

The road dog looks value.

Pick: St Louis Cardinals @ 2.05

73 - 76 (+3.26)

Live MLB - New York Mets at Washington Nationals 1am ESPN

Apologies for the brief absence, I've been busy these last few days and was making hurried picks that really needed a closer look (not the last pick suffered; if you go Over and a guy pitches the best game of his career, you're going to struggle!) so I thought I'd wait until I had a few minutes.

This is a bet on my list for today (rather than just a forced pick of a live game) as the lack of love for Niese and the Mets seems to offer some value.

The Mets are on a qualifying win streak and Niese is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA against Washington in his last three against them: L3 he has a 0.86/0.82 line, so he's in form.

Ross Ohlendorf has put together some decent numbers (1.22/3.31 L3) and has been strong at home, but lately seems to run out of energy and concentration, meaning he hasn't got deep into games and is prone to the long ball: that could spell trouble with a NY offense that has picked up.

Pick: NY Mets @ 2.3
