Starting
Pitchers
Detroit: Fister (11-13,
2.83 ERA)
New York: Nova (16-4,
3.70 ERA)
It’s
a weird situation tonight, with the game a continuation of last night’s rain
out, and although the pitchers have changed, the rules say the lineups must remain
the same. This presents a problem for Jim Leyland, as he tends to platoon
elements of the Detroit batting, according to the pitcher they’re up against and whereas CC
is a lefty, Nova is not.
Fister’s
is quite a story; since joining the Tigers from Seattle in July, he leads the
AL in ERA at 1.79, has a WHIP of 0.839, ranks second in wins with eight, and
sports an extraordinary 11.40 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Crucially,
he is an experienced, pressure pitcher.
Nova
has pitched well, particularly after returning from a spell in the minors; he
has won his last 12 with an ERA of 3.25 over that period. He’s not entirely
unknown to Detroit, but he’s only pitched 2 innings against them – both
scoreless.
Although
I liked the rookie Moore in the Rays/Rangers’ game, there is a different feel
to this game and I
think experience and nerves will have a role to play.
This
looks like a road dog with a live chance and I’ll take the price.
